Obwohl Carlos Santana seit rund 50 Jahren einer der weltweit bekanntesten Gitarristen ist, gibt es kaum Literatur über ihn (zuletzt H. Rudolph). In seiner Autobiografie spielt Musik natürlich die Hauptrolle, aber auch seine Familie und seine spirituelle Entwicklung nehmen grossen Platz in diesem umfangreichen Buch ein. Weitgehend chronologisch wird diese Geschichte erzählt, von den Anfängen in Striptease-Clubs in Tijuana, der Gründung der Band in San Francisco, vom Auftritt in Woodstock und der damit beginnenden Weltkarriere. Diese Karriere wird in den 1980er-Jahren etwas ruhiger, bevor er 1999 mit "Supernatural" ein riesiges Comeback feierte, das bis heute anhält. Er schildert seine Begegnungen mit Musikern und Menschen, die ihn geprägt (M. Davis, J.L. Hooker, B. Graham) oder begleitet haben (W. Shorter, G. Rollie). Natürlich werden auch die Probleme innerhalb der Band, die häufigen Musikerwechsel, der Einfluss von Drogen auf die Musik und die schmerzhafte Trennung von seiner 1. Frau nicht verschwiegen. Ein empfehlenswertes Buch über einen der Wegbereiter der Rockmusik
