Der Band ermöglicht, einfacher und präziser als bisher über den prähistorischen und historischen europäischen Holzhausbau zu sprechen. Die Idee, Begriffe aus dem Bereich des Holzbaus zu sammeln, geht auf eine Tagung 1987 in °Arhus, DK, zurück, und wurde bis 1995 in einem fünfsprachigen Glossar mit ca. 230 archäologischen Fachbegriffen umgesetzt. Der vorliegende Band wurde auf stehende Bauten ausgeweitet und von je einem Archäologen und einem Bauhistoriker um Begriffe aus neun Sprachen bereichert. Ausgehend von grundlegenden Haustypen, Funktionsbezeichnungen und Raumtypen werden Konstruktionselemente von Wandkonstruktionen, Dachwerken und Holzverbindungen behandelt. Ergänzend gibt es Abschnitte zu den Baumaterialien und der Holzbearbeitung mit ihren Werkzeugen. Spezialgebiete wie Befestigungsbau, Brückenbau und Mühlenbau blieben hingegen ebenso ausgeklammert wie Gebiete mit früher Dominanz des Steinbaus wie der Mittelmeerraum. Das vorliegende Glossar umfaßt fast 900 Begriffe und reicht zeitlich von den Wohnhäusern der frühesten seßhaften Menschen des Neolithikums bis zum Beginn des Industriezeitalters um 1800/1850
