Berthold Storfer hat mehr Juden vor den Nationalsozialisten gerettet als etwa Oskar Schindler. In unermüdlicher Tätigkeit ist es ihm gelungen, Tausende Juden aus dem Deutschen Reich herauszuholen. Nach dem »Anschluss« Österreichs 1938 verschärfte das NS-Regime die Verfolgung und Enteignung der jüdischen Bevölkerung und setzte auf eine Politik der gewaltsamen Vertreibung. Storfer legte den Behörden Pläne zur Förderung der jüdischen Auswanderung vor – überzeugt, durch sein Organisationstalent und seine Kontakte mehr Verfolgte als andere retten zu können. Er war logistisch verantwortlich für die Flucht von insgesamt 9096 Menschen – mit Donauschiffen ans Schwarze Meer und von dort mit Hochseedampfern zur Küste Palästinas –, ehe die Nationalsozialisten 1941 die Weichen auf die systematische Vernichtung umstellten und die jüdische Auswanderung untersagten. Ungeachtet seiner Verdienste ist dieser bemerkenswerte Mann bis heute einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit unbekannt geblieben.
