Um 1800 wächst in Lübeck Femke als Adoptivtochter eines Weinhändlers auf. Als napoleonische Truppen den Handel in Lübeck lahm legen, besinnt sich Femke auf ihr handwerkliches Geschick im Bernsteinschnitzen und sorgt so für die Familie. Dadurch kommt sie auch ihrer Herkunft auf die Spur.

Nach "Das Marzipanmädchen" (BA 2/08) wieder ein Roman über eine junge Frau aus Lübeck. Femke wird als Findelkind von einem wohlhabenden, kinderlosen Weinhändler und seiner Frau aufgezogen. Leser des 1. Buches werden einige Orte der Handlung wiedererkennen, auch wenn dieser Roman ca. 50 Jahre früher, zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts spielt. Femke kommt schon als Kind mit einem Bernsteinschnitzer in Kontakt und lernt bei ihm seine Kunst. Als napoleonische Truppen die Stadt besetzen und den Handel lahmlegen, kann sie mit ihrer Kunst die Familie ernähren. Als ihr das Rohmaterial ausgeht, macht sie sich auf eine beschwerliche Reise in den Osten, um neue Steine zu besorgen. Unvermutet findet sie so zu ihren Wurzeln. Auch dieser Roman wird Leserinnen historischer Romane gefallen. Allerdings erscheint der ungewöhnliche Lebensweg dieser besonderen Frau an manchen Stellen doch etwas konstruiert. Die Darstellung des Lebens in Lübeck ist allerdings wieder durchaus gelungen. Empfohlen zur Ergänzung.
