In Walter Benjamins Thesen Über den Begriff der Geschichte spielt der rückwärts blickende ,Engel der Geschichte' eine zentrale Rolle. Benjamin bringt in dieser Chiffre den Historischen Materialismus mit theologischen Aspekten in Verbindung. Die ,Thesen', hermetisch und fragmentarisch formuliert, bedürfen der Deutung und Konkretisierung. Stefan Gandler, der ,Frankfurter Schule' entstammend, verortet die ,Thesen' daher zunächst in ihrem Entstehungszusammenhang während des Nationalsozialismus. Daraufhin entwickelt er eine Lesart, die, inspiriert durch den ecuadorianisch-mexikanischen Philosophen Bolivar Echeverría, auch den historischen Verhältnissen im modernen Lateinamerika Rechnung trägt
