Die fiktionalen Werke höfischer Erzählkunst bieten dem Leser ein umfangreiches Reservoir an teils skurril anmutenden technisch-mechanischen Vorstellungen und Phantasien. In diesem Zusammenhang erweist sich die literarische Darstellung von selbstbeweglichen, „automatischen“ Konstruktionen keineswegs als eine überraschende Ausnahme. Sie ist vielmehr als ein rekurrentes literarisches Motiv zu begreifen, dessen differenzierte Verwendung auf bestimmten Regularitäten fußt und eine Einteilung in wiederkehrende Typen zulässt. Basierend auf der Auswertung eines umfangreichen Textkorpus der mittelhochdeutschen Erzählliteratur vom ausgehenden 12. bis zum späten 14. Jahrhundert werden die diversen Automatenbelegstellen klassifiziert und im Kontext des jeweiligen Einzeltextes mit Blick auf sein semantisch-ideologisches System näher beschrieben. Über eine solche Systematisierung und literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse hinaus beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit dem für die Automaten typischen kulturgeschichtlichen Hintergrund und unternimmt es, die besondere Position des mittelalterlichen Automaten im Überschneidungsbereich von Literatur und Technik aufzuzeigen. Wie die einzelnen Belegstellen vermuten lassen, nimmt die höfische Welt das Automatenthema wesentlich aus den divergierenden Blickwinkeln zentraler gesellschaftlicher Diskurse wie Religion, Kunst, Technik und Magie wahr. Der Automatentopos präsentiert sich dabei einerseits als eine Metapher beziehungsweise Chiffre für eine grundsätzlich bestaunenswerte schöpferisch-kreative Leistung des Menschen, während er andererseits der Erzählinstanz des jeweiligen Einzeltextes nicht selten zum Ausdruck technikkritischer Wertungen dient.
