Während sich F. Illies' "pralles Leseerlebnis" zum europäischen Jubiläumsjahr "1913" längst auf den Bestsellerlisten festgesetzt hat (ID-A 45/12), liefert Kroll hier zum essayistischen Bühnenzauber des Starautors gewissermaßen das historische Unterfutter, zumindest für den deutschen Raum. In der eingeführten populärwissenschaftlichen Reihe (zuletzt C. Kretschmann, ID-A 44/12, vgl. auch H.-C. Kraus, in dieser Nr.) bietet der in Chemnitz lehrende Historiker (zuletzt ID-G 48/08) einen knappen, gut zu lesenden soliden Überblick über Politik, Gesellschaft und Kultur in Deutschland von 1900 bis zum großen Sturm. Der neueren Forschung folgend, skizziert Kraus das Wilhelminische Deutschland vor dem Krieg nicht mehr im Rahmen der "Sonderweg"-Theorie, sieht das Land vielmehr nicht nur in Kultur, Wissenschaften und Wirtschaft, sondern auch im Gesellschafts- und teilweise Staatsgefüge "auf der Höhe zeitgenössischer Modernität".
