Es ist aufwendig, stil- und wirkungsvoll bebildert und erinnert fast an einen Kunstbildband; das Schriftbild ist angenehm und grosszügig. Aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven werden kulturgeschichtliche und biologisch-naturwissenschaftliche Entwicklungslinien des Phänomens Schönheit essayistisch beleuchtet. Die "Gesetzmäi︢gkeiten" und Ideale der Schönheit bei Lebewesen, Kunsterzeugnissen und Naturphänomenen (u.a. Symmetrien) werden ebenso erforscht wie deren Vielfalt, Differenzen und Abweichungen. Spezielle Themen sind u.a. Ästhetik, Schönheit und Macht, Visualität, Mode, Exotik, Körperbemalung, Sexualität. Das Buch wendet sich, wie die Serie, an ein breites Publikum, ist durchgängig gut lesbar und bietet einen spannenden, faktenreichen und kurzweiligen Zugang zum Thema. Ohne Quellen- und Literaturangaben und ohne Sachregister. Insgesamt eine lohnende Lektüre. Breit zu empfehlen. (2)
