Ein neues Kind kommt in die Klasse. Wie aufregend! Ist es nett? Wie sieht es aus? Was sind seine Hobbies? Schon auf die zweite Frage bekommen die Schülerinnen und Schüler der Klasse 4SV der südafrikanischen Colliery Grundschule keine Antwort, denn Tommy trägt eine Mütze, die alles bis auf die Augen bedeckt, aber den Spitznamen gleich mitliefert: Tommy Mütze. Auf dem Schulhof zeigt sich Tommy bald als Fußballtalent – aber niemals ohne Mütze. Jeden Tag rätseln die Kinder darüber, warum Tommy die Mütze nie absetzt, und haben immer neue Ideen, um hinter das Geheimnis zu kommen. Denn Tommy antwortet auf direkte Nachfrage nur mit »Weil«. Daher schlägt zum Beispiel Cherise vor, dass alle aus der Klasse mögliche Gründe für die Mütze aufschreiben und in der Klassenstunde vortragen sollen, damit Tommy endlich mit der Wahrheit rausrückt. An einem anderen Tag verabreden sich die Kinder, ebenfalls alle mit einer Kopfbedeckung in die Schule zu kommen. Mit Witz und Empathie gewinnt die Klasse schließlich Tommys Vertrauen und das überraschende Geheimnis der Mütze wird gelüftet. Jenny Robson, die als weißes Kind die Apartheid miterlebte und heute Lehrerin in Botswana ist, erzählt eine kurzweilige Grundschulgeschichte aus dem heutigen Südafrika. Der Leser erfährt en passant etwas über die ethnische Vielfalt des Landes, die aber nicht explizit thematisiert wird. Universelle Themen wie Vorurteile, Selbstbestimmung, Geschlechter-rollen, Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung regen zum Diskutieren an. In Tommy Mütze drückt Jenny Robsons auch ihre Freude über das Ende der Apartheid aus: In ihrem Nachwort schreibt sie, dass in ihrem »Land ein Wunder geschehen ist«.
