Die "Volksgemeinschaft" definierte sich für die politische Rechte - und besonders für die Nationalsozialisten - vor allem durch Ausgrenzung derjenigen, die nicht zu ihr gehören sollten, allen voran der Juden. Deshalb besaß die alltägliche antisemitische Praxis für die Volksgemeinschaftspolitik des NS-Regimes einen zentralen Stellenwert. Der Verfasser schildert die Umwandlung der bürgerlichen Zivilgesellschaft in eine rassistische Volksgemeinschaft anhand konkreter Fälle in der deutschen Provinz, in Dörfern und kleinen Gemeinden. Dort gingen lokale Partei, SA-Gruppen und HJ-Gruppen aggressiv und gewalttätig gegen jüdische Kaufleute, Bürger, Nachbarn wie auch gegen diejenigen vor, die noch Kontakt zu Juden hielten. Dabei konnten sich die Gewalttäter der heimlichen wie der offenen Komplizenschaft, sogar des Einverständnisses und Mittuns vieler anderer sicher sein. In den Gewalttaten, die die Grenzen des Erlaubten zunehmend ausweiteten, ließ sich die eigene Überlegenheit erfahren. Die Herstellung der Volksgemeinschaft bedeutete daher nicht bloß die Zerstörung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft, sondern auch antisemitische Selbstermächtigung. (AUT)
