Zwischen Oktober 1813 und Januar 1814 belagerten alliierte Truppen aus Preußen, Russland und Österreich 73 Tage lang das französisch besetzte Erfurt. Danach teilte für 130 Tage eine streng bewachte Grenze die Stadt. Bei den Kämpfen, vor allem aber durch Krankheiten starben damals Tausende Einwohner und Soldaten. Noch gut 200 Jahre später lassen sich in Erfurt Spuren dieser Ereignisse entdecken. Archäologen fanden Münzschätze und Uniformteile, aber auch Überreste gestorbener Soldaten. Der Verfasser, der an vielen Grabungen beteiligt war, hat Archivdokumente und Funde der Belagerung zusammengestellt. Anhand von zahlreichen kommentierten Abbildungen werden bislang unbekannte Einblicke in das Stadtbild Erfurts vor 200 Jahren gegeben und erinnern an die Schrecken und Folgen der Belagerungszeit.
