Fast ein Vierteljahrhundert hat Hermann Wallich (1833–1928) die Geschicke der Deutschen Bank an führender Stelle mitgelenkt. Dafür war er prädestiniert. Wallich stammte aus einer im Rheinland alteingesessenen jüdischen Familie. Früh mit dem internationalen Bankgeschäft vertraut, führten ihn seine Wege von Paris nach Réunion, Shanghai und Yokohama. Und so galt er bereits als ausgewiesener Kenner des überseeischen Marktes, als der Währungspolitiker Ludwig Bamberger 1870 an ihn herantrat, um ihn für den Aufbau der Deutschen Bank zu gewinnen, die vor allem in der Finanzierung des Außenhandels tätig werden sollte. Wallich willigte ein und hatte seine Lebensaufgabe gefunden.
