Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Manifestationen ökologischen Bewusstseins in seit den 1980er Jahren entstandenen Texten deutschsprachiger Literatur und knüpft somit an das Forschungsfeld des Ecocriticism an. Ausgangspunkt ist die Tatsache, dass sich ökologisches Bewusstsein in literarischen Texten in Auseinandersetzung mit der naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplin der Ökologie, der philosophischen Disziplin der Naturethik sowie der medialen Berichterstattung über die ökologischen Probleme herausbildet. Um das Zusammenspiel dieser komplexen und zueinander in einem Spannungsverhältnis stehenden Diskurse angemessen zu beschreiben, wird methodisch auf die von Jürgen Link im Anschluss an Michel Foucault entwickelte Interdiskursanalyse rekurriert. Dieser methodische Ansatz wird durch Einbezug der Umweltgeschichte erweitert, was dazu dient, die jeweiligen diskursiven Formationen in den Texten kulturgeschichtlich zu verorten. Die Analyse und Interpretation der Texte von Günter Grass, Andreas Maier, Kathrin Röggla und Ilija Trojanow zeichnen die Bewegung vom typischen ›deutschen‹ Phänomen des Waldsterbens hin zum globalen ökologischen Problem des Klimawandels nach und zeigen, dass die Texte die mediale Berichterstattung über Umweltthemen zunehmend kritisch reflektieren, da diese zum Alarmismus tendiert und ein «mediales Rauschen» erzeugt.
