Die Thematisierung des Frau-Seins bzw. der ‚Neuen Frau‘ auf eine spezifische Art und Weise in der modernen Literatur geschieht – wenn auch auf verschiedene Art und Weise – fast zeitgleich sowohl in der europäischen als auch in der chinesischen Kultur. Gilgi – eine von uns von Irmgard Keun und Regenbogen von Mao Dun sind repräsentative weibliche Bildungsromane, in denen die Identitätskrise der modernen Frauen verhandelt wird. Zugleich deutet das unterschiedliche Zeitbewusstsein in beiden Romanen auf unterschiedliche Charakterzüge in der modernen westlichen und der modernen chinesischen Literatur hin: Wird die Fortschrittsideologie in der westlichen Literatur infrage gestellt, wird sie in der chinesischen hingegen angenommen oder gar propagiert. Während die westliche Literatur die Moderne und die Modernität kritisch reflektiert, nehmen die chinesischen Literaten am Programm der gesellschaftlichen Modernisierung durch literarische Modernisierung teil. In den beiden hier behandelten Fällen erkennt man darüber hinaus eine Ambivalenz des „weiblichen Schreibens“, die innenhalb des jeweiligen kulturellen und geschichtlichen Kontextes diskursiv zu erörtern ist.
