La comedia famosa de Saber del mal y el bien fue escrita por Calderón entre los años 1624 y 1627 y representada en el palacio del Pardo a finales de 1627 o principios de 1628. Se trata de una "comedia de privanza", subgénero dramático iniciado a principios del siglo XVII. Calderón dramatiza la historia del reinado de Alfonso VII Imperator totius Hispaniae y su relación (alterada por el dramaturgo) con el noble don Pedro González de Lara. Introduce en la acción al noble portugués don Álvaro de Viseo, evidente anacronismo histórico, pero que sitúa esta comedia entre las de "materia portuguesa". El tema fundamental es el del concepto de privanza y la polémica suscitada en Europa ante la aparición de este personaje. En Saber del mal y el bien se abordan los temas fundamentales de esta controversia: necesidad del valido, su papel en el gobierno de la monarquía, origen del poder real e inestabilidad del cargo. La edición se basa en el texto de Primera parte de comedias, publicado en Madrid en 1636
