De fait, les pénuries et les problèmes d'accès à l'eau sont susceptibles de limiter la croissance économique dans les années à venir. C'est le constat que dresse l'édition 2016 du Rapport mondial des Nations Unies sur la mise en valeur des ressources en eau, L'eau et l'emploi. Il sera présenté le 22 mars à Genève, à l'occasion de la Journée mondiale de l'eau. De son extraction jusqu'à son retour dans la nature, en passant par ses différents usages, l'eau est un facteur clé dans la création d'emploi qu'il s'agisse d'emplois directement liés à la gestion de cette ressource (approvisionnement, infrastructure, traitement des eaux usées...) ou à des secteurs économiques gourmands en eau comme l'agriculture, la pêche, l'énergie, l'industrie et la santé. Par ailleurs, l'accès à une source d'eau potable et à l'assainissement favorise une main d'œuvre éduquée et en bonne santé, facteur indispensable de croissance. Analysant l'impact économique de l'accès à l'eau, le Rapport cite notamment de nombreuses études qui montrent une corrélation positive entre l'investissement dans le secteur de l'eau et la croissance économique.
