Diversen historischen Romanen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts sind unterschiedliche Geschichtskonzepte inhärent, die sich mit den geschichtsphilosophischen Ideen seit der Spätaufklärung konstruktiv auseinandersetzen und diese produktiv weiterentwickeln. Die Autorin zeigt auf, wie die Texte gleichzeitig einen Rahmen für die politische oder soziale Ideologie oder den Kunstbegriff des jeweiligen Autors bilden. Sie geht so den neuen Schreibformen im Genre des historischen Romans nach, die durch die Orientierung an der Geschichtsphilosophie statt an der Geschichtswissenschaft entstanden sind. Auf Grundlage eines eigens entwickelten Kategorienmodells, das geschichtsphilosophische Konzepte von der Spätaufklärung bis zum Untersuchungszeitraum ordnet, umfasst die Untersuchung Texte von A. Döblin, L. Feuchtwanger, H. Mann, E. Mitterer, W. von Molo, A. Kuckhoff und I. Seidel.
