Content:
Schilderungen von stürmischem Meer sind in der Literatur des Mittelalters weit verbreitet, bislang aber von der Forschung stark vernachlässigt worden. Diese Arbeit erschließt der Mediävistik ein neues Motiv und mit diesem einen neuen Blickwinkel auf die Forschung zur Naturwahrnehmung im Mittelalter. Das geschieht durch einen kommentierten Katalog literarischer Seesturmschilderungen und durch Analysen einer Stichprobenauswahl aus dem 9. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert. Alle Seesturmschilderungen werden im Hinblick auf die Topik des Motives, auf die Verarbeitung naturphilosophischer und technischer Entwicklungen der jeweiligen Entstehungszeit, auf den Realitätsgehalt der Schilderung und die Funktion des Motivs für die Gesamtkomposition und Deutung des jeweiligen Werkes hin untersucht. Der interdisziplinäre Ansatz kommt zu neuen Ergebnissen, die die bisherige Sicht auf Naturwahrnehmung im Mittelalter modifiziert.
