Der engagierte Bremer Erziehungs- und Schulreformer Heinrich Scharrelmann (1871 - 1940) führte nicht nur mit der Schulbehörde einen "harten Kampf gegen die reine Lernschule, für die Erlebnis- und Arbeitschulidee, die zur freien Entfaltung des Kindes führen sollten". Auch seine Kinderbücher entsprechen dem didaktischen Prinzip, durch Beobachten und aus der Perspektive des Kindes die Welt begreifbar zu machen. In seinen "Berni-Büchern" läßt er in einfacher, natürlicher Sprache den kleinen Berni von seinem Alltag, seiner Umwelt und seinen Erfahrungen mit anderen Menschen erzählen: "Was er sah und hörte, als er noch nicht zur Schule ging" (1908), "Aus seiner ersten Schulzeit" (1912), "Berni im Seebade" (1916), "Berni lernt Menschen kennen" (1922) und "Berni lernt Menschen verstehen" (1926). Die "Berni-Bücher" waren sehr beliebt, erschienen in großen Auflagen, wurden von Reformpädagogen im Unterricht eingesetzt und in Auszügen in zahlreiche Fibeln und Lesebücher übernommen. Großen Anklang fanden auch die Illustrationen im Spät-Jugendstil von von Paul Helms, die allerdings in der "Volks- und Schulausgabe" fehlen. Die "Berni-Bücher" gehören zu den ersten realistischen "Umweltgeschichten", die unmittelbar die Lebenswirklichkeit von Kindern widerspiegeln - und am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine neue Gattung der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur begründeten. - Vergl. Lexikon KJL
