Alter ist ein zentrales Merkmal literarischer Figuren. Es bedingt ihren Aktionsraum, ihr Verhaltensrepertoire, ihre sozialen Beziehungen zu anderen und vieles mehr. Besonders bedeutsam ist die Kategorie Alter für die Kinder- und Jugendliteratur: Über Alterskonstruktionen sind hier Fragen von Abhängigkeiten, Wissen, Erfahrungen, Erinnerungen und Entwicklung verhandelbar. Dabei treten Erwachsene nicht nur als Eltern und Lehrkräfte auf. Es sind auch (Ur-)Großeltern und ältere Menschen in weiteren sozialen Rollen, die für kindliche und jugendliche Figuren zum wichtigen Gegenüber werden - z. B. in Bezug auf existenzielle Themen wie Krankheit und Tod. Literaturwissenschaftlich und literaturdidaktisch ist das Thema bisher allerdings unterbelichtet. Dieser Band ändert das: Anhand einschlägiger Texte der Gattungen Bilderbuch, Kinder- und Jugendroman sowie Film richten die Autor*innen den Fokus auf diese vielfältigen Beziehungskonstellationen.
