Die Romane Jakob Wassermanns "Das Gänsemännchen", "Der Fall Maurizius" und "Etzel Andergast" begeistern im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts die Leserschaft mindestens ebenso wie die Romane eines Lion Feuchtwanger oder Thomas Mann. Jakob Wassermann, weil jüdischer Herkunft, wird allerdings als Erfolgsautor von der antisemitischen Literaturkritik nicht anerkannt. Vielmehr werden ihm die Eigenschaften eines guten deutschen Schriftstellers abgesprochen. Unter den permanenten antisemitischen Angriffen bereits vor 1933 resigniert Jakob Wassermann und stirbt mit 61 Jahren in Altaussee in Österreich. Diese literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit beschreibt die antisemitische Literaturpolemik gegen Jakob Wassermann und weist nach, dass seine Werke in ständiger Auseinandersetzung mit diesen antisemitischen Stereotypen entstanden sind.
