Die beiden Seagraves - zuletzt von Sterling Seagrave: Die Konkubine auf dem Drachenthron (BA 7/93) - schildern beginnend mit der Meiji-Periode (ab 1868), die Geschichte des japanischen Kaiserhauses über 5 Generationen. Die Autoren rekonstruieren, z.T. gestützt auf erst jüngst erschienene Quellen, einige bisher unbekannte Zusammenhänge. Im Zentrum stehen die Kapitel über Hirohito, der von 1926-89 Kaiser war. Er wurde ebenso wie Prinz Asaka, der "Schlächter von Nanking" - zum Massaker von Nanking: Iris Chang (BA 7/99) - durch Falschaussagen, die die Amerikaner um General MacArthur erzwungen hatten, vor einer Verurteilung durch das Kriegsverbrechertribunal gerettet. Die Amerikaner waren - so die Seagraves - maßgeblich an der Restauration nach 1945 beteiligt. Die Autoren neigen dazu, ihre Schilderungen mit unnötigen, mitunter erfundenen Details auszuschmücken. Trotzdem haben die Seagraves ein provokantes, wichtiges Buch verfasst, das sich sehr kritisch mit der jüngeren japanischen Geschichte auseinandersetzt. (1) (Andreas Ufen)
