Die Untersuchung bietet eine satzsemantische Kritik der deutschen und deutschsprachigen Sprachgeschichtsschreibung, auf der zweiten Metaebene der Geschichte. Da die Bedeutung vergangener Ereignisse in den 25 Sprachgeschichten systematisch als Bedeutung für etwas anderes (Bedeutenderes) versprachlicht wird, behandelt sie den syntaktischen, semantischen und pragmatisch-interaktiven Gebrauch der Präpositionalgruppe mit für. Als Satzglied wird die Präpositionalgruppe im Textverlauf dauernd an eine neue Position verrückt; semantisch-pragmatisch wird sie dabei immer wieder neu interpretiert - derart, dass auch Ereignisbedeutungen ständig neu hergestellt werden. Dadurch bildet sie dasjenige "verrückte" Zeichen im Text (Boris Groys), das den Blick darauf freigibt, wie Geschichte im Inneren des Mediums gemacht wird, wie sie eindeutige Botschaften und sogar die "Wirklichkeit verfehlt" (Koselleck). Verrückte historische Aussagen mit für dienen auch dem Schreiben für verschiedenste Interessent/-innen, der Stimmgebung und Adressierung mit für. Zwölf Aussagetypen werden herausgearbeitet und kritisch in Einzeltext und Textsorte eingeordnet. So soll der Dialog zwischen (Text-)Linguist/-innen, Sprachhistoriker/-innen und Historiker/-innen neu angestoßen werden
