TALMUD, das Lernen, genauer die Lernung, bezeichnet im eigentlichen Sinne das Studium der Tora, des Pentateuch. Im übertragenen Sinne versteht man unter Talmud ein Werk, in dem das Ergebnis dieses Studiums niedergelegt ist. Der babylonische Talmud, ein Werk des nachbiblischen frühen Judentums, bildet neben der hebräischen Bibel die Grundlage der Synagoge. Der ursprünglich knapp gefaßte Text wurde im Laufe der zeit durch Kommentare erweitert. Neben den Regeln, die das Leben normieren, steht Erzählgut in Form von Legenden, Gleichnissen und Sprüchen, ferner erbaulicher Vortrag und Gebet. Jüdischen Leben vieler Jahrhunderte spiegelt sich im Talmud wider. Jakob Fromer, Herausgeber dieses Bandes, gibt mit seiner kommentierten Auswahl in komprimierter Form Einblick in das Wesentliche talmudischer Dialektik.
