Der Autor unterstreicht intensiv die zentrale Bedeutung des Abendmahls für die gesamte Theologie Luthers, indem er eine umfangreiche Textpassage aus der Abendmahlsschrift von 1527, die bisher in ihrem argumentativen Zusammenhang kaum gewürdigt worden ist, heraushebt, systematisch erklärt und «als Kompendium der Theologie Luthers» erörtert. Das Abendmahl bildet in Luthers Denken den Schnittpunkt von Gottes Erniedrigung (Kondeszendenz) und des Menschen Erhöhung in das Leben Gottes. Dabei zieht der Autor immer wieder erhellende Rückschlüsse aus der Theologie- und Philosophiegeschichte des Altertums, des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit. Diese systematische Kommentierung und Erläuterung des Mittelteils der Schrift von 1527 bildet eine Eigentümlichkeit in der bisherigen Literatur zu Luthers Abendmahlslehre und kann so als ein besonderer systematischer Beitrag zur Erforschung der Theologie Luthers gewertet werden.
