Am Beispiel von Grimmelshausens Der seltzame Springinsfeld entfaltet diese Studie die These, dass Schelmenromane ein Drittes der Ökonomie zur Darstellung bringen können, das neben der Haushaltsführung und dem Marktgeschehen keinen Platz im gelehrten Diskurs hat. Allerdings hängt dieses Dritte mit Kontexten zusammen, die in der historischen Rückschau nicht unbedingt auf Anhieb als ökonomisch erscheinen. Um diese Kontexte in den Blick zu bekommen, stützt sich die Studie auf eine kritische Adaptation des sogenannten New Historicism. Dabei zeigt sich, dass in Grimmelshausens Roman nicht nur einschlägige Wissenselemente zu einem buntscheckigen Tableau zusammengefügt sind, sondern darüber hinaus das Erzählen und Schreiben selbst ökonomisiert wird.
