Dieser Band erschien 1891 als Fortsetzung der "Kritik der Moderne". Er enthält Bahrs Auseinandersetzung mit dem Naturalismus, dem Begriff der Wahrheit und dem Marxismus, sowie Essays zu Emile Zola, Octave Feuillet, Maurice Materlinck und Berichte von Kunstreisen durch die französische Provinz und durch Kastilien. Hermann Bahr ist eine der herausragendsten Persönlichkeiten der vorletzten Jahrhundertwende. Ob Naturalismus oder Symbolismus, Impressionismus oder Décadence, Secession, Expressionismus oder Heimatkunst - es scheint keine Bewegung um 1900 zu geben, die Hermann Bahr nicht schon im Entstehen aufgenommen und publizistisch begleitet hätte.
