Die 1739 erstmals erschienene, in der Folgezeit oftmals wiederaufgelegte Metaphysica des wohl originellsten Wolffianers Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) war zweifelsohne das erfolgreichste Werk des späteren Begründers der Ästhetik. Seine epochemachende Wirkung verdankt sich nicht zuletzt der Tatsache, daß Kant es jahrzehntelang seinen Metaphysik- und Anthropologievorlesungen als Leitfaden zugrundegelegt hat. Aufgrund seines vertrackten Lateins heute leider sträflich vernachlässigt, wird dieser Basistext der Philosophie des 18. Jahrhunderts hier in der leicht gekürzten deutschen Ausgabe von Baumgartens kongenialem Interpreten Georg Friedrich Meier (1713-1777) neu zugänglich gemacht und terminologisch erschlossen. Eine umfangreiche Hinführung, die auch den als Kant-Gegner berühmt gewordenen Zweitherausgeber Johann August Eberhard (1739-1809) mit in den Blick nimmt, eröffnet bezüglich des Entstehungsumfeldes der kritischen Philosophie unerwartete Perspektiven
