Die Schriftstellerin Vicki Baum symbolisierte den Typus der »Neuen Frau« in der Weimarer Republik, zu deren emanzipiertem, selbst- und körperbewusstem Lebensstil nicht zuletzt der Tanz gehörte. Ihre Erzähltexte, journalistischen Arbeiten und Reiseberichte reflektieren den Tanz in seinen ästhetischen, sozialen, politischen, ethnischen und Gender-Aspekten. Neben tanzhistorischen und -theoretischen Kontexten und Einzelinterpretationen einst vielgelesener Romane bzw. literarischer Tanzkunstwerke wie »Menschen im Hotel«, »Die Tänze der Ina Raffay«, »Marion«, »Die goldenen Schuhe« und »Liebe und Tod auf Bali« berücksichtigt die Untersuchung erstmals auch weitgehend unbekannte Texte von und über Vicki Baum in Archivbeständen. Angestrebt wird damit auch die Neubewertung einer Schriftstellerin, die sich selbst als »erstklassige Autorin zweiter Güte« bezeichnet hat.
