Dieses Buch spricht über Sternbilder und ihre Mythen und tut das in zweifacher Weise. Erstens hat es die Absicht dem Leser zu helfen, wenn er sich am Sternenhimmel zurechtfinden möchte, und zweitens will es ihm die Vielfalt der Bilder vermitteln, die damit verbunden sind. Da sind Geschichten und Erzählungen, überlieferte Dichtungen und Sagen, die von Göttern und Dämonen, von der Entstehung der Welt und von der Erschaffung des Menschen sprechen. Hunderte Namen erinnern uns an früheste Bil der vergangener Kulturen, die geheimnisvoll durch Jahrtausende zu uns herauHeuchten. Daneben gibt es aber auch "rationale Bilder", wie das ptolemäische und das koperni kanische Weltbild. Diese Vielfalt der Bilder hat etwas ganz Eigenartiges an sich: Sie widersprechen sich scheinbar und stehen doch in gleichwertiger Pluralität nebeneinan der und bereichern in wertvoller Weise unsere ganzheitliche Sicht. Ein Bilderpluralismus tut sich also auf und befreit uns aus der Enge eines eingleisigen Denkens. Am Anfang des Buches (Kapitel 2) stehen die prächtigen Erzählungen aus Ovids Metamorphosen. Dann (Kapitel 3) ist vom Sternenhimmel im Jahreskreis die Rede, um den Leser anzuregen, diesen fast unendlichen Bilderreichtum sich selbst durch ei gene Beobachtungen zu erschließen. Der Sternenhimmel im Frühjahr, im Sommer, im Herbst und im Winter wird gezeigt, und ein weiterer Satz von Himmelskarten ermöglicht das selbständige Beobachten zu jedem beliebigen Zeitpunkt des Jahres im Bereich von 35 bis 65 Grad nördlicher geographischer Breite. Ein umfangreicher Abschnitt (Ka pitel 4) spricht von den einzelnen Sternbildern und dem hierzu überlieferten Wissen.
