Liebe und Ehe treten bei Hartmann von Aue schon als ‘Einzelphänomene’ hervor, doch erweist sich darüber hinaus gerade das Zusammenspiel beider Faktoren als von zentraler Bedeutung für seine Erzähltexte. Daher steht die Verbindung von Liebe und Ehe im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit. Zunächst widmet sich die Untersuchung jeweils einzeln Hartmanns erzählenden Werken Erec, Iwein, Gregorius und Der arme Heinrich. Dabei gilt es, den spezifischen Umgang jeder Dichtung mit dem Themenkomplex Liebe und Ehe zu beleuchten. Darauf folgt eine Gegenüberstellung der vier Texte, die sich an sieben Schwerpunkten orientiert – von der Liebesentstehung bis zu dem Verhältnis von Ehe und Eheliebe zur Gesellschaft und zu Gott. In den Einzeluntersuchungen wie im Vergleich werden die Befunde zu Liebe und Ehe bei Hartmann in Beziehung gesetzt zu der hochmittelalterlichen Ehelehre und Ehepraxis.
