Von der Nachkriegszeit bis zur sogenannten Wende, in einem Zeitraum dreier Generationen also, in dem ein vereintes Europa Wirklichkeit geworden ist, vollzog sich ein Wandel nicht nur der politischen und ökonomischen Verhältnisse, sondern auch im Verhältnis der Generationen zueinander. Dieser Generationenwandel, der im historischen Verständnis kaum zur Sprache kommt, widerspiegelt sich in Familiengeschichten und in der Literatur, nicht zuletzt in der Literatur für Kinder und Jugendliche in allen europäischen Ländern. Die vorliegende Beitragssammlung dokumentiert ein Symposion von Kinder- und Jugendbuchfachleuten aus acht europäischen Ländern und geht der Frage nach, welche Ideen, Wünsche, Hoffnungen, aber auch Realitäten und kritischen Haltungen Kindern und Jugendlichen in dieser Zeitepoche literarisch vermittelt wurden und wie sich in der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts auch Modernisierungsprozesse abzeichnen, die den gesellschaftlichen Wandel begleiten, reflektieren oder auch mit beeinflussen.
