Spätmittelalter in Köln: Die 10-jährige Johanna wird zur Halbwaise, als der Vater, der beim Dombau beschäftigt ist, einen tödlichen Unfall erleidet. Die Mutter kann ihre Kinder nicht allein ernähren, daher wird Johanna als Haushaltsgehilfin bei einem Kaufmann in Stellung gegeben. Ausgerechnet der Sohn dieses Kaufmanns ist der Anführer einer gegnerischen Strassenbande. Johanna befürchtet das Schlimmste und wird tatsächlich mit Arbeiten überhäuft. Aber Andreas, der Kaufmannssohn, entpuppt sich in der Not als Verbündeter, der ihr sogar verbotenerweise das Schreiben und Lesen beibringt. Als die Kinder bei einem nächtlichen Ausflug versehentlich den Dieb stellen, der für die Einbruchserie in den Sakristeien verantwortlich ist, gerät ihr Leben in Gefahr. Die studierte Archäologin C. Frieser (bekannt durch die "Oskar"-Bände, vgl. zuletzt "... und das Geheimnis des Klosters") schildert hier wieder kenntnisreich und authentisch die Verhältnisse im Mittelalter aus der Sicht der Kinder.
