Das Schöne erlebt seit einiger Zeit eine erstaunliche Renaissance. Doch »was das Schöne sei?« (Platon), genauer zu bestimmen, ist ein Problem, das in der europäischen Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte immer wieder aufgeworfen wurde. Die dabei in Poetik und Kunsttheorie intensiv diskutierte Frage, ob es eine eigene Schönheit der Literatur gibt und worin sich diese, als notwendig durch die Sprache vermittelte Schönheit, möglicherweise von anderen Formen des Schönen unterscheidet, verfolgt die Studie erstmals in einem größeren Zusammenhang. Dieser reicht von den Anfängen der theoretischen Begründung und Problematisierung 'schöner Rede' durch den sophistischen Rhetoriker Gorgias über die systematische Erforschung des literarischen Mediums im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert bis zur modernen experimentellen »Konkreten Poesie« eines Ernst Gomringers und der mathematischen 'Programmierung des Schönen' in der Textästhetik Max Benses. Neu gelesen werden unter diesem Gesichtspunkt einschlägige Texte der literarästhetischen Tradition wie Lessings »Laokoon«, Schillers »Kallias«-Briefe oder die Hegelsche »Ästhetik«, aber auch entlegenere, für die Entfaltung des Problems nicht weniger aufschlussreiche Theoretiker wie etwa Gustav Gerber oder Theodor A. Meyer. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schönen, so zeigt sich, entdeckt und reflektiert die Literaturästhetik auf besondere Weise die Eigenart des sprachlichen Zeichens zwischen Sinn und Sinnlichkeit, die Struktur des literarischen Mediums und seine Darstellungsleistungen, aber auch das, was sich sprachlicher Vermittlung zu entziehen scheint.
