Content: Drawing on manuscript sources, this book examines how the medieval clergy developed the authority and persuasive force to attempt to govern the day-to-day speech of Western Christians. It shows how attempts were made to portray some political, social and private speech as deviant and destructive, labelling it lying, slander, blasphemy and other Sins of the Tongue. It explores, for the first time, how Chaucer, Langland, Gower and the 'Patience' poet use the different strains of this pastoral discourse not only to expose the destructive power of speech in political and social life but also to judge clerical claims to authority and efficacy in formulating and applying codes of speech.

Content: The volume assesses performative structures within a variety of medieval forms of textuality, from vernacular literature to records of parliamentary proceedings, from prayer books to musical composition. Three issues are central to the volume: the role of ritual speech acts; the way in which authorship can be seen as created within medieval texts rather than as a given category; finally, phenomena of voice, created and situated between citation and repetition, especially in forms which appropriate and transform literary tradition. The volume encompasses articles by historians and musicologists as well as literary scholars. It spans European literature from the West (French, German, Italian) to the East (Church Slavonic), vernacular and Latin; it contrasts modes of liturgical meditation in the Western and Eastern Church with secular plays and songs, and it brings together studies on the character of 'voice' in major medieval authors such as Dante with examples of Dante-reception in the early twentieth century.

Content: Die interdisziplinäre Studie befasst sich mit komischen Inszenierungen des menschlichen Körpers in der Vormoderne. Sie beschreibt Ansätze zu einer Theorie des Lachens über körperliche Komik; sie zeichnet Aufgaben und Funktionen von Possenreißern (scurrae) im Übergang von der antiken zur christlich-mittelalterlichen Kultur nach; sie arbeitet verschiedene Handlungsmuster körperlicher Komik in theatralen Gattungen wie Neidhart- und Fastnachtspiel, Geistlichem Spiel, Farce und Commedia dell'arte sowie in Erzähltexten der deutschen und europäischen Schwank- und Novellenliteratur des Spätmittelalters heraus. Im Zentrum steht ein performatives Verständnis dieser historischen Komikformen, das die Wechselbeziehung des komischen Vorgangs mit dem gemeinschaftlichen Lachen der Rezipienten profiliert und die grundlegende Verkörperung komischer Semantik in Aufführungen und Texten aufzeigt. Forschungsgeschichtlich erweitert sie das bislang geltende Paradigma sprachlicher Komik auf den Körper und macht seine Bedeutung für die Literatur- und Theatergeschichte in der Epoche zwischen 1300 und 1550 greifbar.
