Content: This 1999 volume was the first to explore as part of an unbroken continuum the critical legacy both of the humanist rediscovery of ancient learning and of its neoclassical reformulation. Focused on what is arguably the most complex phase in the transmission of the Western literary-critical heritage, the book encompasses those issues that helped shape the way European writers thought about literature from the late Middle Ages to the late seventeenth century. These issues touched almost every facet of Western intellectual endeavour, as well as the historical, cultural, social, scientific, and technological contexts in which that activity evolved. From the interpretative reassessment of the major ancient poetic texts, this volume addresses the emergence of the literary critic in Europe by exploring poetics, prose fiction, contexts of criticism, neoclassicism, and national developments. Sixty-one chapters by internationally respected scholars are supported by an introduction, detailed bibliographies for further investigation and a full index.

Content: Those who don't study the past tend to pour a thick molasses of nostalgia over it, to idealize and glorify the golden days of yore... Bibliotheca Fictiva brings home that old epigram that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The same fastbuck criminals, twisted hoaxsters, disgruntled academics, deviant malcontents and other forgery perpetrators at work today were even harder at work in ancient times, the medieval era, the reformation, the renaissance, the age of enlightenment, the industrial era and of course into modern times. Only the motivation for forgery seems to have altered. --William Butts, Manuscripts Bibliotheca Fictiva is an inventory of books and manuscripts relating to literary forgery spanning 24 centuries--from antiquity to the beginning of the 21st century A.D. With 1,676 entries arranged by time period and region, including specific commentary on the forgers, their work, and the scholars who exposed them. A prefetory overview surveys the entire field in its topical, historical, and national diversity. With table of contents, list of illustrations, preface, acknowledgments, introduction, list of abbreviations, and index. Color frontispiece with black and white illustrations throughout text. xvi, 423+ 1 pages. cloth, dust jacket, title gilt-stamped on spine, ribbon bookmark. 4to..
