Im Rahmen eines radikalen Paradigmenwechsels wandert ein ursprünglich kirchliches Fest in die Wohnzimmer - das moderne Verständnis der weihnachtlichen Festpraxis ist zugleich Ausdruck eines zur Leitkultur gewordenen Bürgertums. Zeitgleich entwickelt sich auch das Theater zu einem Leitmedium bürgerlicher Kultur. Laura Schmidt zeichnet die Beziehungsgeschichte von Fest und Theater seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert nach. Analysiert werden Texte und damit verbundene Aufführungsformen weihnachtlicher Theaterstücke.
