J. Bodmer, G. A. Bürger, Ch. F. Gellert, J. W. L. Gleim, J. W. von Goethe, F. von Hagedorn, J. G. von Herder, A. L. Karsch, A. Kauffmann, J. C. Lavater, G. E. Lessing, M. Mendelssohn, J. H. Voß und Ch. M. Wieland. In den Kapiteln zu seinen Schriften werden auch die kulturpolitischen Projekte, etwa eine tiefgreifende Reform der deutschen Rechtschreibung, im geschichtlichen Kontext dargestellt und verständlich erklärt. So entsteht das Bild eines faszinierenden Menschen und radikalen Dichters, der bis zu seinem Lebensende mit neuen Themen und Formen experimentierte.
