Content: Totalitarianism has been an object of extensive communicative research since its heyday: already in the late 1930s, such major cultural figures as George Orwell or Hannah Arendt were busy describing the visual and verbal languages of Stalinism and Nazism. After the war, many fashionable trends in social sciences and humanities (ranging from Begriffsgeschichte and Ego-Documentology to Critical Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis) were called upon to continue this media-centered trend in the face of increasing political determination of the burgeoing field. Nevertheless, the integration of historical, sociological and linguistic knowledge about totalitarian society on a firm factual ground remains the thing of the future. This book is the first step in this direction. By using history and theory of communication as an integrative methodological device, it reaches out to those properties of totalitarian society which appear to be beyond the grasp of specific disciplines. Furthermore, this functional approach allows to extend the analysis of communicative practices commonly associated with fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union, to other locations (France, United States of America and Great Britain in the 1930s) or historical contexts (post-Soviet developments in Russia or Kyrgyzstan). This, in turn, leads to the revaluation of the very term »totalitarian«: no longer an ideological label or a stock attribute of historical narration, it gets a life of its own, defining a specific constellation of hierarchies, codes and networks within a given society.

Content: Die obersten Herrschergewalten der vormodernen Welt waren gleichsam auf die Unterstützung ihrer Eliten angewiesen und diese Eliten wiederum befanden sich häufig in einer ambivalenten Situation zwischen Konkurrenz und Kooperation sowohl untereinander als auch in der Beziehung zu den Herrschenden. Dieser Band vereint neun Studien, die sich mit der Frage nach Kommunikationsformen zwischen obersten Herrschaftsträgern und Eliten befassen. Die Beitragenden aus verschiedenen Fachrichtungen nähern sich dieser gemeinsamen Fragestellung anhand von Fallbeispielen aus Ostasien, Europa und Südamerika zwischen dem 2. Jahrhundert vor Christus und dem 16. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert und eröffnen so eine transkulturelle Perspektive auf ein globales Phänomen. Sie betrachten verschiedene Facetten von Kommunikation wie Verständigung, Beratung, Rituale und Zeremonien, aber auch Kritik.This volume brings together nine studies that deal with forms of communication between supreme rulers and elites. Using case studies from East Asia, Europe and South America between the 2nd century B.C. and the 16th century A.D., the interdisciplinary approach opens up a transcultural perspective on a global phenomenon. By examining various facets of communication such as understanding, consultation, rituals and ceremonies, but also criticism, it can be shown how supreme ruling powers in the pre-modern world were dependent on the support of their elites and how these elites in turn often found themselves in an ambivalent situation between competition and cooperation both among themselves and in their relationship with the rulers.

It also includes a Forum section seeking to prompt discussion of new directions in eighteenth-century German studies. An essay documenting Goethe's engagement with China and another on Goethe's legacy in post-WWII Argentina emphasize these new directions. Other essays highlight Goethe's inter-arts approaches (music, theatre, collecting); interdisciplinary intersections of eighteenth-century literary studies with gender and social history; media theory; and renewed emphasis on materialism. The latter is the focus of a recently convened collaboration on early nineteenth-century inventories presented in this volume. The customary book review section rounds out the volume.

Content: Totalitarianism has been an object of extensive communicative research since its heyday: already in the late 1930s, such major cultural figures as George Orwell or Hannah Arendt were busy describing the visual and verbal languages of Stalinism and Nazism. After the war, many fashionable trends in social sciences and humanities (ranging from Begriffsgeschichte and Ego-Documentology to Critical Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis) were called upon to continue this media-centered trend in the face of increasing political determination of the burgeoing field. Nevertheless, the integration of historical, sociological and linguistic knowledge about totalitarian society on a firm factual ground remains the thing of the future. This book is the first step in this direction. By using history and theory of communication as an integrative methodological device, it reaches out to those properties of totalitarian society which appear to be beyond the grasp of specific disciplines. Furthermore, this functional approach allows to extend the analysis of communicative practices commonly associated with fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union, to other locations (France, United States of America and Great Britain in the 1930s) or historical contexts (post-Soviet developments in Russia or Kyrgyzstan). This, in turn, leads to the revaluation of the very term »totalitarian«: no longer an ideological label or a stock attribute of historical narration, it gets a life of its own, defining a specific constellation of hierarchies, codes and networks within a given society.
