Der 19-jährige Nicholas Nickleby bittet nach dem Tod des Vaters seinen reichen Onkel, einen Börsenmakler, in London um Hilfe für sich, seine Mutter und Schwester. Dieser aber schickt den jungen Mann auf Land, um als Hilfslehrer in einem Internat mit brutalen Erziehungsmethoden zu arbeiten, und führt die Schwester aus egoistischen Motiven in seine gesellschaftlichen Kreise aus reichen Geschäftsleuten ein, um sie als Lockvogel für Investoren zu missbrauchen. Der tapfere Nicholas wehrt sich gegen die unmenschlichen Zustände in der Schule, nimmt sich eines Jungen an und kommt nach London zurück, um mit Hilfe freundlicher Mitmenschen unverdrossen um die Würde der Familie zu kämpfen. Eine detailfreudige, ganz im Kolorit des 19. Jahrhunderts gehaltene Charles-Dickens-Verfilmung mit stimmungsvollen menschlichen Karikaturen, einem für Dickens typischen moralischen Überbau und hervorragenden Schauspielern. - Sehenswert ab 14.
