Die Olympischen Spiele in Sydney mit dem Fahrrad zu erreichen war ursprünglich das Ziel des damals 32jährigen Wolfeners. Mit Empfehlungsschreiben des Nationalen Olympischen Komitees, Verabschiedung durch Landrat, Bürgermeister, Freunde und Familie begab sich Thomas Meixner am 1. Mai 1998 mit über einem Zentner Gepäck auf seinem Rad, das er auf den Namen ,,Else" taufte, auf Abenteuerreise, die drei Jahre und sieben Monate dauern sollte.

Lieber gescheitert als unversucht" war sein Reisemotto. Gescheitert ist er nie, denn trotz etlicher Negativerlebnisse, wie etwa eine schwere Infektion in Indien oder ein versuchter Raubüberfall in Ecuador, kehrte er mit seiner "Else" glücklich am 2. Dezember 2001 wieder in seine Heimatstadt Wolfen (Landkreis Bitterfeld) zurück. 36 Länder auf 5 Kontinenten bereiste der gelernte Elektromechaniker. Dabei suchte er nicht immer die Postkartenidylle, sondern radelte oft auf einsamen Strecken fernab der ausgetretenen Touristenpfade.
