    Content: Wagdy El Komy beschreibt in seinen Erzählungen ein Ägypten, das nach dem arabischen Frühling in einer repressiven Wende zu versinken droht, mit einer Hauptstadt, die langsam, aber stetig in sich zusammenfällt, und einer Mittelschicht, die sich allmählich auflöst. Er beschreibt die immer quälenderen Alltagssorgen des ägyptischen Mittelstands mit Empathie und einem wunderbaren Hang zum Absurden. Sowohl sprachlich wie thematisch steht Wagdy El Komy dabei in einer Kontinuität zu den ägyptischen Klassikern des 20. Jahrhunderts, Nagib Machfus und Taufik al-Hakim, denen das Absurde zunehmend zum notwendigen Mittel wurde, die Realität in ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit überhaupt noch erzählerisch fassbar zu machen. "Hüter der Tränen" stellt den in deutscher Sprache bislang kaum wahrnehmbaren Autor mit einer kleinen Auswahl von Erzählungen sowie einem Essay des Übersetzers Joël László vor.
