Parallel zu diesem Band erscheint ein in der textlichen und grafischen Gestaltung ähnliches Buch über die Maya (in dieser Nr.). Das dort Gesagte gilt auch hier: eine gelungene Synthese von allgemein verständlichem Text und sehr gutem Fotomaterial zu einem hervorragenden Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Der italienische Altamerikanist Domenici beschreibt hier chronologisch die Geschichte der indianischen Kulturen Zentral- und Hochmexikos ab dem 2. Jahrtausend vor Christus. Die kurze, nur 200 Jahre währende Entwicklung der aztekischen Kultur von den Anfängen bis zu ihrem Höhepunkt mit den imposanten Bauten in Tenochtitlan, dem heutigen Mexico City, bis zu ihrem Untergang, der bei den Azteken direkt durch die Spanier verursacht wurde, nimmt nur ein Drittel des Bandes ein, insofern trügt der Sachtitel. Genauso wichtig sind die anderen frühen Kulturen, z.B. die Tolteken. Da hier aber zu diesen Kulturen und zu den Azteken kaum vergleichbare Literatur vorgestellt wurde, kann der Band für das nichtwissenschaftliche Publikum sehr empfohlen werden. (2)
