Inhalt: "Uniting analytic philosophy with Buddhist, Indian, and Chinese traditions, this collection marks the first systematic cross-cultural examination of one of philosophy of mind's most fascinating questions: can consciousness be conceived as fundamental to metaphysics? Engaging in debates concerning panpsychism, emergence and mental causation, realism vs. idealism and illusionism, it understands problems through the philosophies of East and South-East Asia, in particular Buddhism and Vedanta. Each section focuses on a specific aspect or theory of consciousness, and examines a subject area from different subject perspectives including philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science. These different angles allow us to gain insight into the intellectual challenges and problems of the study of consciousness and its place in the thought traditions of both East and Western philosophy. Raising new questions, it provides a more global and holistic understanding of consciousness, presenting a stimulating and original contribution to contemporary consciousness and the metaphysics of mind."--

Inhalt: "Crossing continents and traveling through the centuries, Key Concepts in World Philosophies brings together over 30 of the core ideas associated with the major Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic, African, Ancient Greek and modern European philosophers. What connects these foundational ideas is the universal theme of transformation: how has each concept sought to change our way of understanding the world we live in or the life we are living? From Socratic logos and Chinese xin to reason in 18th-century Germany and equity in Islamic thought, an international team of experts cover a diverse set of ideas and theories originating from thinkers such as Kant, Confucius, Buddha, Dogen, Nietzsche, Zhuangzi, Hegel and Husserl. Divided into three sections organised around the major themes of knowledge, metaphysics, and aesthetics, each short chapter provides an introductory overview with contextual background, supported by discussion questions and further reading suggestions. Beginning with an introduction that explains how these concepts can be used as tools in contexts outside of their own, this one-of-a-kind study guide allows you to read philosophical texts from all over the world, understand how to practice cross-cultural philosophy and find out how philosophical ideas can be applied to your own life."--

Inhalt: "This book collects original essays on the epistemology of modality and related issues in modal metaphysics and philosophical methodology. The contributors utilize both the newer "metaphysics-first" and the more traditional "epistemology-first" approaches to these issues. The chapters on modal epistemology mostly focus on the problem of how we can gain knowledge of possibilities, which have never been actualized, or necessities which are not provable either by logico-mathematical reasoning or by linguistic competence alone. These issues are closely related to some of the central issues in philosophical methodology, notably: to what extent is the armchair methodology of philosophy a reliable guide for the formation of beliefs about what is possible and necessary. This question also relates to the nature of thought experiments that are extensively used in science and philosophy. The Epistemology of Modality and Philosophical Methodology will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working on the epistemology and metaphysics of modality, as well as those whose work is concerned with philosophical methodology more generally"--

Inhalt: "What is the relationship between ontology and modality - between what there is, and what there could be, must be, or might have been? Bob Hale interwove these two strands of metaphysics throughout his long and distinguished career, putting forward his theses in his book, Necessary Beings: An Essay on Ontology, Modality, and the Relations Between Them (OUP 2013). Hale addressed questions of ontology and modality on a number of fronts: through the development of a Fregean approach to ontology, an essentialist theory of modality, and in his work on neo-logicism in the philosophy of mathematics. The essays in this volume engage with these themes in Hale's work in order to progress our understanding of ontology, modality, and the relations between them. Some directly address questions in modal metaphysics, drawing on ontological concerns, while others raise questions in modal epistemology and of its links to matters of ontology, such as the challenge to give an epistemology of essence. Several essays also engage with questions of what might be called 'modal ontology': the study of whether and what things exist necessarily or contingently. Such issues have an important bearing on the kinds of semantic commitments engendered in logic and mathematics (to the existence of sets, or numbers, or properties, and so on) and the extent to which one's ontology of necessary beings interacts with other plausible assumptions and commitments."--
