Note:
Einmal mehr ist die Diskussion innerhalb der Sprachwissenschaft von einer "Krisenwahrnehmung" bestimmt; die "Krise der Sprachwissenschaft" ist aber ein Topos, der die Phasen ihrer institutionellen Verselbständigung seit dem 19. Jahrhundert periodisch markiert. Diese "Krise der Sprachwissenschaft" hat zwei komplementäre Aspekte: einerseits die Modernisierung des Wissenschaftsbetriebes, dessen Professionalisierung durch die zunehmende arbeitsteilige Zerlegung der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschungen gebunden an ihre Institutionalisierung, andererseits die wachsenden diskursiven Abgrenzungen zwischen den unterschiedlichen Richtungen, die die Verständigung über das, was denn nun die Sprachwissenschaft sei, auch innerhalb der Zunft nahezu unmöglich machen.

Eine Rekonstruktion dieser endemischen "Krise der Sprachwissenschaft" wäre mehr als nützlich: Was heute als Konfrontation von sogenannter "harter" und "weicher" Sprachwissenschaft erscheint, steht der Konfrontation vor 100 Jahren um junggrammatischen "Positivismus" bzw. "Formalismus" gegenüber einer mehr ganzheitlichen bzw. kulturhistorischen Orientierung in nichts nach; sie reproduziert sich zyklisch unter gleichen Schlagworten in den Diskussionen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg (Stichwort "idealistische Neuphilologie"), in den 30er und 40er Jahren (Stichwort "Sprachsoziologie" bzw. "Sprachinhaltsforschung" gegenüber dem deskriptiven Strukturalismus) und schließlich in den Debatten um Soziolinguistik und "materialistische Sprachwissenschaft" gegenüber dem harten Kern der Grammatiktheorie seit dem Ende der 60er Jahre.

Eine solche Rekonstruktion des sprachwissenschaftlichen Diskurses kann dazu führen, daß die Identität von Sprachwissenschaft als historisches Verhältnis verständlich wird - gegen die dominierenden Versuche der eigenen Option zu einem wissenschaftlichen Monopol zu verhelfen, indem man ihr eine respektable Ahnengalerie fabriziert (s. Brekle 1985 für die methodologischen und methodischen Probleme der Sprachwissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung)
