    Content: Der Benediktiner Ranulph Higden verfasste Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts die Weltchronik Polychronicon, die in England mehr als hundert Jahre lang verbreitet und rezipiert wurde. Die Chronik beginnt mit einer umfassenden Kompilation geographischen Wissens aus einschlägigen Werken antiker und mittelalterlicher Autoren. Zwanzig Weltkarten begleiten die handschriftliche Überlieferung. Sie zeigen den vom Ozean umgebenen Erdkreis mit Asien, Afrika, Europa und dem Mittelmeer. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert erstmals alle bekannten Polychronicon-Karten sowie ihre kodikologischen und inhaltlichen Kontexte. Ausgehend von Higdens Auffassung von Wissen wird erörtert, wie und warum hier geographische Angaben zur Abbildung gebracht wurden. Die zeitgenössische Praxis des Memorierens erweist sich dabei als wesentlicher Faktor bei der Konzeption der Karten, die weniger Hilfsmittel zum Erlernen von Geographie waren als Produkte angeeigneten Wissens. Sie tradieren ein mentales Bild der Welt, das auf der Lektüre des Polychronicon beruhte.
    Content: Twenty representations of the globe accompany the late medieval transmission of Benedictine monk Ranulph Higden’s world chronicle, the Polychronicon. This study is the first to analyze all these maps and their codicological and thematic contexts. It asks how and why geography was represented here, explaining the influence that the contemporary practice of memorizing knowledge had on the conceptualization of representations of the world.

    Content: This volume deals with the music of the Devotio moderna, an influential religious movement in Northern Europe during the late Middle Ages. As its point of departure it takes a unique source from the second half of the fifteenth century, manuscript 16 H 34 (olim B 113) from the University library of Utrecht, which was hitherto largely unknown. Five studies deal with the codicological construction, the systems of notation, the function, liturgical and paraliturgical aspects and the polyphonic arrangements of the songs. In der theologischen Analyse wird die Literatur der vier Rechtsschulen detailliert untersucht, wobei alle Sonnenphänomene, die im Kontext des rituellen Gebets normativ sind, gesammelt und präzise definiert werden. Zudem werden die Rechtsurteile der vier Schulen in Bezug auf das Phänomen der anhaltenden Dämmerung und das Fehlen von Gebetszeiten im Allgemeinen zusammengetragen und diskutiert. In diesem Zusammenhang werden mehrere Unklarheiten hinsichtlich der Genese früher ḥanafītischer Rechtsurteile durch eine sorgfältige kodikologische Analyse aller relevanten Werke geklärt. Die astronomische Analyse stellt einen neuen, halbautomatisierten Algorithmus vor, der speziell auf die Bedürfnisse der islamischen Gebetszeiten zugeschnitten ist. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem sogenannten Tamkīn-Konzept, das eine Reihe notwendiger Korrekturen für die Umrechnung geozentrischer Sonnenstände in scheinbare Sonnenstände umfasst. Darüber hinaus enthält die astronomische Analyse eine gründliche Untersuchung der Korrespondenz zwischen den für islamische Gebetszeiten relevanten Sonnenphänomenen und Sonnenständen. Zu diesem Zweck wird sowohl eine umfassende kodikologische Analyse, die die Meinungen von mehr als 400 islamischen Astronomen zum Stand der Sonne während der Morgen- und Nachtgebetszeiten zusammenträgt, als auch eine Untersuchung moderner wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse durchgeführt. Schließlich wird die Anwendung des entwickelten Algorithmus exemplarisch dargestellt und kontextualisiert, indem die damit berechneten Gebetszeiten mit den Zeiten der wichtigsten deutschen Gebetszeitkalender verglichen werden.
    Content: Englische Version: This study provides a holistic analysis of Islamic prayer times according to the four sunnī schools, exploring them from theological, astronomical and historical perspectives. In the theological analysis, the literature of the four schools is studied in detail and all solar phenomena normative in the context of ritual prayer are collected and precisely defined. Furthermore, the rulings of the four schools concerning the phenomenon of persistent twilight and the absence of prayer times in general are gathered and discussed. In this regard, several ambiguities related to the genesis of legal rulings provided by early Ḥanafī jurists are clarified on the basis of a careful codicological analysis of all works in question. The astronomical analysis presents a novel semi-automated algorithm tailored to the specific needs of Islamic prayer times. In this, a particular emphasis is placed on the so-called tamkīn framework which entails a set of necessary corrections for converting geocentric altitudes to apparent ones. The astronomical analysis moreover contains a careful analysis of the correspondence between solar phenomena relevant for Islamic prayer times and solar altitudes. To this end, an extensive codicological analysis collecting the opinion of more than 400 Islamic astronomers concerning the altitudes associated with the times of the morning and the night prayer is performed together with a discussion of according modern scientific results. Finally, the usage of the thereby obtained algorithm is exemplified and contextualised through a comparison of the prayer times obtained with the times of the most important German prayer time calendars.

    Content: Diese Studie bietet eine ganzheitliche Analyse der islamischen Gebetszeiten gemäß den vier sunnitischen Rechtsschulen und betrachtet sie aus theologischer, astronomischer und historischer Perspektive. In der theologischen Analyse wird die Literatur der vier Rechtsschulen detailliert untersucht, wobei alle Sonnenphänomene, die im Kontext des rituellen Gebets normativ sind, gesammelt und präzise definiert werden. Zudem werden die Rechtsurteile der vier Schulen in Bezug auf das Phänomen der anhaltenden Dämmerung und das Fehlen von Gebetszeiten im Allgemeinen zusammengetragen und diskutiert. In diesem Zusammenhang werden mehrere Unklarheiten hinsichtlich der Genese früher ḥanafītischer Rechtsurteile durch eine sorgfältige kodikologische Analyse aller relevanten Werke geklärt. Die astronomische Analyse stellt einen neuen, halbautomatisierten Algorithmus vor, der speziell auf die Bedürfnisse der islamischen Gebetszeiten zugeschnitten ist. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem sogenannten Tamkīn-Konzept, das eine Reihe notwendiger Korrekturen für die Umrechnung geozentrischer Sonnenstände in scheinbare Sonnenstände umfasst. Darüber hinaus enthält die astronomische Analyse eine gründliche Untersuchung der Korrespondenz zwischen den für islamische Gebetszeiten relevanten Sonnenphänomenen und Sonnenständen. Zu diesem Zweck wird sowohl eine umfassende kodikologische Analyse, die die Meinungen von mehr als 400 islamischen Astronomen zum Stand der Sonne während der Morgen- und Nachtgebetszeiten zusammenträgt, als auch eine Untersuchung moderner wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse durchgeführt. Schließlich wird die Anwendung des entwickelten Algorithmus exemplarisch dargestellt und kontextualisiert, indem die damit berechneten Gebetszeiten mit den Zeiten der wichtigsten deutschen Gebetszeitkalender verglichen werden.
    Content: Englische Version: This study provides a holistic analysis of Islamic prayer times according to the four sunnī schools, exploring them from theological, astronomical and historical perspectives. In the theological analysis, the literature of the four schools is studied in detail and all solar phenomena normative in the context of ritual prayer are collected and precisely defined. Furthermore, the rulings of the four schools concerning the phenomenon of persistent twilight and the absence of prayer times in general are gathered and discussed. In this regard, several ambiguities related to the genesis of legal rulings provided by early Ḥanafī jurists are clarified on the basis of a careful codicological analysis of all works in question. The astronomical analysis presents a novel semi-automated algorithm tailored to the specific needs of Islamic prayer times.
