Inhalt: This article analyses the relationship between energy consumptionin industry and industrial productivity and the implications of this forsustainable development. To this end, it presents a matrix characterizingeconomies as: (i); converging or diverging in terms of energy consumptionper unit of value added, and (ii); catching up with or falling further behindthe productivity level of the international frontier (the United States);. On thebasis of data from the industrial surveys of four Latin American countries(Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico);, it concludes that the region's evidentspecialization in natural resource-intensive sectors has contributed to apattern of high energy consumption and slow productivity growth, andthat while there is no productive convergence, there is evidence of energysustainability in three of the four countries analysed.

Inhalt: "Credibility-it's elemental to business leadership. You can't lead without it. For successors in familybusinesses, establishing credibility can be their greatestchallenge. Growing up in the shadows of their predecessors'successes makes it difficult for successors in family businesses toestablish themselves and use their gifts to lead. To lead storied family businesses, successors build credibilitythe hard way - just like their parents did: they earn it. However, they may face the more formidable challenge of winningover those loyal to another leader and another way of doingbusiness. They also live with the pressure of leading somethingthat has already been successful. In ground-breaking research, Andrew Keyt interviewed more than 25 successors of family businesslegends, including Massimo Ferragamo (Salvatore Ferragamo), JohnBurke (Trek), Bill Wrigley Jr. (The Wrigley Companies), ChristieHefner (Playboy Enterprises), John Tyson (Tyson Foods) and DickDevos (Amway). The insights and analysis from the study form thebasis for the key insights on how successors overcome the obstaclesto credibility and build on what the legends created"--

Inhalt: The discussion of styles of development has been complicated bythe improper use of this and other associated terms. In order to avoidmisunderstandings, this article starts by examining the concepts of systemand structure and on this basis, goes on to define a style of developmentas "the way in which human and material resources are organized andassigned within a particular system with the object of solving such questionsas what goods and services to produce; how; and for whom". Morespecifically, it notes two sets of features of such styles: (a); those whichmake up the structural basis of the production apparatus, especially thesectoral structure of the product and employment, the various technologicalstrata, and the predominant type of external relationship, and (b); thedynamic elements of the system, which are revealed by analyzing the leveland composition of demand and its underlying basic factors, namely thelevel and distribution of income. These two sets of features are closelylinked by a circle of mutual cause and effect. The article does not limit itself to a conceptual explanation: on thebasis of statistical data it also describes the prevailing economic stylesin Latin America, the fundamental problems which beset them, and thepossible options for solving these.

Inhalt: What does 'if' mean? It is one of the most commonly used words in the English language, in itself a sign to the importance of conditional thinking to human cognitive life. We make conditional statements, ask conditional questions, and issue conditional orders. We need to think and talk conditionally for many purposes, from everyday decision-making to mathematical proof. Yet the meaning of conditionals has been debated for thousands of years. Suppose and Tell brings together ideas from philosophy, linguistics, and psychology to present a controversial new approach to understanding conditionals. It argues that in using 'if' we rely on psychological heuristics, methods which are fast and frugal and mostly, but not always, reliable. As a result philosophers and linguists have been led astray in theorizing about conditionals through trusting faulty data generated by such methods and prematurely rejecting simple theories on thebasis of merely apparent counterexamples. This book shows how one such simple theory of conditionals can explain the data, and draws wider implications for the nature of meaning and its non-transparency to native speakers, vagueness in thought and language, and the need for semantics to attend to theunreliable heuristics underlying our judgments.

Inhalt: Regarding future developments in a globalised world, one of the keyindustries is going to be the pharmaceutical industry including thebiopharmaceutical industry as a part thereof. It is notorious that thisindustry is based on the consolidated scientific research anddevelopment results in the human-related genetic engineering andmolecular biotechnology. Due to the economic as well as social andpolitical importance of this branch of industry, the use and need of legalguidelines regarding biopharmaceutical research as well as theeconomic utilisation of biopharmaceutical research results isundeniable and indispensable. Especially intellectual property rightsplay a significant role in this context.〈br〉 In accordance with this appraisal, the " Agreement on Trade-RelatedAspects of Intellectual Property Rights" foresees the importance ofintellectual property rights in the course of a globalised internationaltrade. In this context, the TRIPs-Agreement was enacted in 1994 "desiring to reduce distortions and impediments to international trade, andinto account the need to promote effective and adequateprotection of intellectual property rights, and to ensure that measuresandtointellectualrights do notthemselües become barriers to legitimate trade".〈br〉 Not only in the People's Republic of China and the European Union, theproper approach to achieve these goals is since then widely discussed. The question is, whether national as well as trans- and supranationalregulations concerning intellectual property rights should be wider orstricter to ensure technological development meanwhile regardingsocial necessities, such as the availability of medical and agriculturalproducts in developing countries.〈br〉 Eventually there was a diverse development in the People's Republic ofChina, as a country, which is taking its steps from a developing countryto an industrial giant, in opposition to the development within theEuropean Union, where industrial protectionism became a driving forcein this context. Undesired effects can be found within the varyingtransformation acts in the People's Republic of China and theEuropean Union.〈br〉 It stands to reason that especially questions concerning patent rightslead to legal uncertainty for globally acting institutions. Amongst others, those questions inüolüe the following fundamentals: Is there apossibility to be granted patent protection for human-related geneticand biotechnological inüentions atWhat are the essent requirements in that case? What is all?the scope of the protection by patent going to be?〈br〉 This research paper's attention is going to be focused on thefundamentals of patent protection for inüentions based on scientificresearch and development conclusions in the human-related geneticengineering and biotechnology in the People's Republic of China andthe European Union respectively, as such patents are essential for thefuture of the (bio-)pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore the overalldevelopments to this day on the level of intellectual property rights inthe People's Republic of China and the European Union since theenactment of the TRIPs-Agreement can be vividly demonstrated on thebasis of the question about the patentability of such inüentions.
