Abstract:
We provide one of the first insights into ontogenetic changes in the size and structure of the chimpanzee vocal repertoire. Infant and juvenile repertoires were best described by the same number of clusters, suggesting no changes in repertoire size within the first 10 years. Acoustic overlap between call clusters was significantly greater for juvenile chimpanzees compared to infants, demonstrating the acoustic structure of the chimpanzee vocal repertoire becomes increasingly graded in the first 10 years.
