Abstract:
The Gara Mulatta is a large „inselberg”︁ plateau (3400 m a.s.l.) in East‐Ethiopia with basalt as parent material. The two main escarpments of the long‐ranged massif are governed by different moisture regimes because of the monsoon resp. the trade winds. The pediment of the moist SW‐slopes is covered by a montane mixed broad‐leaved forest which is very rich in species. Diversity is reduced at higher altitudes and there is a gradual transition into the belt of mountain‐bushes. There are only few scattered trees of the former Podocarpus forest being left on the pediment of the drier NE‐escarpment. The slopes are covered by a devasted Juniper forest. At moister places like small valleys or depressions a Hagenia forest with great diversity has developed associated with Erica arborea in the upper parts. There is no distinct ericaeous belt. The plateaus and the terrace‐like narrow plains are covered with grasslands and herbaceous scrubs containing several endemic afro‐alpine species like Lobelia, Helichrysum a.o.
