What's new? The critical role of thyroperoxidase (TPO) in thyroid function is evident by its mutation, which is a common cause of congenital hypothyroidism. Its mutation has also been implicated in thyroid cancer, a hypothesis that gains new support with this study, in which two TPO genetic variants, rs2048722 and rs732609, were linked to risk of differentiated thyroid cancer in a European study population. Among Italian patients, a negative association was identified for both variants, while for Spanish patients, a positive association was found. The association patterns suggest a role for population‐specific factors in thyroid cancer.
